What We Know
With the brand's latest release, Christopher Ward is calling all adventurous types to take a closer look at the new C63 Sealander Extreme GMT. Representing CW's take on a more rough-and-tumble travel watch, this latest iteration of the C63 format offers a larger case and a number of travel and adventure-ready features in a format clearly inspired by the icons of the travel and exploring category.
Coming in at 41mm and 11.65mm thick, the C63 Sealander Extreme GMT uses a steel case that is water resistant to 150 meters, has 22mm lugs, a sapphire crystal, and is finished with a black fixed ceramic bezel with luminous numbers. The model is available with either a green or a black dial, and you can find the complete specs listed below.
Lume plays a big role in this model's design, as not only is the bezel prepared for low-light conditions, but the dial features 18 applied Globolight markers and hands. The material is essentially luminous ceramic and allows for a 3D block of lume, rather than a conventional painted element.
Inside, this GMT is powered by the caller-spec Sellita SW330-2, a Swiss-made, automatic movement that ticks at 4 Hz, has a power reserve of 56 hours, and offers a date display coordinated to the six o'clock position on the Sealander Extreme GMT's dial. Furthermore, and called out by the "Anti-Shock" text on the dial, the movement is suspended by a floating rubber movement mount to help manage the effects of bumps and shock.
Available on a steel bracelet or Christopher Ward's new V-Strap, a Velcro-equipped two-piece Cordua strap in either black or orange that tapers by 4mm before the clasp. Pricing starts at $1,785 on the V-Strap or $1,995 on the steel bracelet.
What We Think
Forming what is essentially the combination of the C60 Trident Lumière and a sort of love letter to various design elements of the Rolex Explorer II, you have to expect me to be a fan of this glowingly tactical take on a travel watch. The sizing seems just right, the fixed bezel looks great, and the large and fully luminous markers offer strong legibility. I also appreciate the nicely balanced date at six.
With the bright orange GMT hand and the option of a matching Cordura strap, I'd likely lean toward the black dial model as I like the way the bezel matches the matte dial. Those looking for something a bit less conventional can always opt for the green. I borrowed a similarly sized C60 Trident Lumière a while back and was very impressed by the build quality, the sizing, and definitely the lume.
With this model costing a bit less than the Trident Lumière ($2,470 on a bracelet) while adding a useful complication, I wouldn't be surprised if the new C63 Sealander Extreme GMT proves to be a very popular model for Christopher Ward as the brand continues to expand its enthusiast-driven lineup.
