IntroducingThe Monta Watches Triumph V2

The St. Louis-based microbrand updates its classic field watch with a new generation.

What We Know

Today, Monta releases the second generation of its Triumph model, the microbrand's take on a contemporary field watch design, first released back in 2017 during the brand's earlier days. The brand credits the Triumph as putting the Monta name on the map in the world of microbrands, and after eight years, the Triumph has gotten some subtle new updates.

The aptly named Triumph V2 features a 40mm stainless steel case, upscaled from the 38.5mm casing of the original. It also gets slightly taller case height, though it remains relatively slim at 10.7mm tall. Despite the larger dimensions in diameter and height, Monta keeps the proportions of the Triumph V2 wearable with the same 47mm lug-to-lug as its predecessor. From a case design perspective, everything appears to remain relatively unchanged. However, the V2 gets the addition of crown guards, perhaps as a functional way to identify the new generation silhouette (while protecting the crown). Water resistance has been increased from 150 meters to 200 meters, and the movement inside is the Sellita SW300. You can find the complete details below.

The Triumph V2 is introduced in only one dial variant to kick off its release, a black Explorer-like dial with applied hour markers, three and nine numerals, as well as a date window at 6 o'clock. Available for preorder with delivery in January, Monta has announced that the first 100 pieces will be priced at $1,550 on a quick-adjust bracelet, while the regular retail pricing of the Triumph V2 will be $1,850.

What We Think

St. Louis-based Monta has continued to make solid tool watches, though with their clean, unfussy aesthetic, the brand seems to be flying under the radar quite a bit these days. The new V2 of the Triumph will offer a nice opportunity to pick up a Monta for those who have been curious from afar, especially those with larger wrists who found the older case size to be much too small.

Given the preservation of the same lug-to-lug wearability on this new generation, I'm sure that the updated proportions must be seen in person, but at the same time, it's interesting to see the brand make the move into a slightly larger case when 38.5mm seemed to have hit the sweet spot for many enthusiasts.
