What We Know
Imagine my surprise when I got a message yesterday from Andrew McUtchen, founder of Time+Tide, telling me that they were launching a dress watch. Yes, a dress watch from the "Kings of the Outback" (as I'm choosing to nickname the team behind the Furlan Marri Outback Elegy and a trio of Zenith collaborations, among many other things). A dress watch from our friends over at Time+Tide is certainly unexpected. Yet, for their first foray into this territory, this new collaboration with Dennison is a stunner.
We've covered Dennison a few times before—first with our introductory story about the brand, and recently with their collaboration with Collectability, our friend John Reardon's company. If you're looking for background on the brand, start there. The framework for this watch remains the same as other releases, with a 37mm by 33.5mm cushion/TV-shaped case and 6.05mm thickness. The watch remains powered by a Swiss Ronda Quartz 1032. But Time+Tide has chosen to take the large, open canvas of the dial and turn it into a marquetry masterpiece.
Dennison is no stranger to using stones as dial material, and mother-of-pearl (used here) is technically a natural gemstone. Both the marquetry technique and the material are a first for Dennison. The idea came from the brand's designer Emmanuel Gueit, who envisioned rectangular filaments of the Australian mother-of-pearl hand-inlaid onto the dial. The result is a stunning mix of dark and light tones that shimmer in the light as you move your wrist, and plays off a vintage dress watch theme that McUtchen has (to his own surprise) fallen down a rabbit hole researching of late.
The new Dennison x Time+Tide "DateNight" is available on a Molequin suede strap (with an optional white leather strap). Pay attention to how the ordering process works, so you don't miss out. The Time+Tide x Dennison DateNight will be available online for 24 hours only here starting August 27, 2025, at 8:00 am ET. The first 200 orders will ship within 7-14 days, with the remaining orders arriving in early November. After this window, it will be available exclusively at Time+Tide Watch Discovery Studios in Melbourne, London, and their soon-to-be-opening location in New York. The price is $995, inclusive of taxes, duties, and fees.
What We Think
For less than a thousand dollars, this new collaborative release strikes me as pretty impressive. Yes, it's an upcharge over their recent release with Collectability, but Dennison is adding value in dial craftsmanship that has historically been hard to find at the price. Dennison is one of the growing number of smaller brands leading the charge with features such as stone dials that were previously often far out of reach for many consumers (with high price points or intensely exclusive production).
This reminds me of Chopard's recent L.U.C. Quattro Spirit 25 with a straw marquetry dial; unsurprisingly, I guess, because they both use variations on the same technique. But obviously, they're two vastly different propositions in watchmaking and price. There's an Albert Gleizes-esque Cubist quality (specifically his Cubist landscape era of the 1910s), or maybe more aptly Lyonel Feininger (see "Gelmeroda" from a slightly later era), that I really like about the watch. Dennison, like Anoma and a few other design-forward brands, presents a proposition for buyers to get very attractive designs at an affordable price.
