What We Know
It's been what feels like a while since Unimatic released a new product that wasn't a collaboration, but today, the Milan-based brand expands its collection with nine models in total, part of the Diving Heritage collection. Yes, nine models sounds like a lot, but it's actually a pretty simple product matrix if we break it down — three different models, in three different colorways. The Diving Heritage collection sees the Modello Uno diver, the Modello Uno GMT, and the Modello Tre chronograph get vintage-inspired colorways of matte black, tropical brown, and "vintage navy" for the dials and rubber straps, all serving as a nostalgic take on designs that are often given contemporary twists.
As with the rest of the familiar Unimatic lineup, the brushed steel cases are all rated for 300m of water resistance, with each piece individually pressure-tested to meet the depth standard. All three models have screw-down crowns, while the Modello Tre chronograph also includes screw down pushers for this spec. The dials bring an aged tone through "old radium" colored Super-LumiNova on the indices and hands. On the Modello Uno GMT, the oversized GMT hand is hollowed out, and the arrow tip is dipped in matching lume. Unidirectional aluminum bezels, featuring Unimatic's new typeface, which was launched last year, also feature a darker, warmer tone for the text.
Unimatic has positioned this new series of watches distinctly in its mid-priced segment, using Seiko movements across the line — the NH35A movement for the Modello Uno, the NH34A ''caller'' GMT movement for the Modello Uno GMT, and the VK64A mecha-quartz movement for the Modello Tre. This keeps all three well under a thousand Euros each. All three are limited to 300 pieces each, with the Modello Uno Diver and the Modello Tre Chronograph priced at €625, and the Modello Uno GMT at €750.
What We Think
While it seems that Unimatic has been quite prolific in its release cadence this year, its product page remains relatively brief, as it has sold through most of its previous offerings. In fact, most of the watches currently available are the standard production families of the Classic and Tool Watch series. It makes quite a bit of sense for the brand to introduce a few more models into the lineup for the summer. As far as Unimatic releases go, these are quite conservative. However, my favorites among the bunch are the brown "tropical" dials, as they work best with the creamier lume colors, and it's nice to see this style of color return to production after a long time. I'd have loved to see a Modello Cinque, the brand's smallest watch, get these colorways, as a smaller field watch with a tropical dial aesthetic would have looked great — adding it to my wishlist.
