Rolex has commissioned David Chipperfield Architects for a new headquarters in Midtown Manhattan, according to reports from WatchPro, Dezeen, and Archinect. The new structure will reportedly be 25 stories tall and replace the current Rolex building at Fifth Avenue and 53rd Street in New York City. The architecture firm won the contract after an international design competition, according to its website, and will "provide brand experiences across a wide range of the company's interests," noting that the current building has "been occupied by Rolex since the 1970s."
The new building will offer plenty of office space and, of course, house a new Rolex boutique at the street level. The sight of the current Rolex building is one of my enduring memories from my first visit to NYC during my earliest years of appreciating watches and, given the brand's interest in architecture, it's exciting to see how Rolex plans to reintegrate with a neighborhood that has changed a lot since the 1970s when they first set up the shop in Midtown.
