A downsized, 36mm remix of JFK Jr.'s favorite '90s classic.

What We Know

Picture this: it's February of next year, and you're tucked in for a nice evening, browsing through Netflix's latest offerings after that signature "tudum" sound. Your eyes grow wide as you're presented with Ryan Murphy's latest project, "American Love Story" — focusing on the relationship of JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, America's "royal couple" of the 1990s. Suddenly, you remember a John John-inspired Timex you bought some six months back and run to your watch box. Strapping it on and pressing play, all is right in the world — the perfect watch for the perfect moment.

The Timex Intrepid x Dimepiece Edition

Following up on the success of April's sold-out 1995 Intrepid Reissue, Timex has tapped Dimepiece's Brynn Wallner to slightly tweak the Intrepid to her tastes with the help of Alan Bedwell of Foundwell. The resulting Timex Intrepid x Dimepiece Edition maintains the cushion-style case, 100m water resistance, and general vibe of the 1995 original and recent reissue while downsizing the case from 46mm in diameter all the way to the wearable sweet-spot of 36mm and tweaking the tone of the INDIGLO activation pusher at 9 o'clock, among other subtle changes.

Wallner, who Hodinkee readers should recall from a previous Hodinkee Three on Three appearance and as a contributor, founded Dimepiece to bring a unique point of view to the watch world, incorporating elements of popular culture into a new kind of watch "enthusiasm" that isn't so capital-E "Enthusiast." A mainstay in her content has always been spotting watches on the wrists of cultural figures, both past and present. The genesis of this watch is that – Wallner's "spotting" of JFK Jr., seen below, wearing a curious watch (with a suit, I might add!) during an aimless scroll through Getty Images. She quickly sent the photo to Bedwell, a keen eye for everything and anything vintage, who responded succinctly, "It's a Timex. DO NOT POST THIS PHOTO. Let's send it to Timex and see if they'll reissue the watch."

In April, Timex, Wallner, and Bedwell did just that — a reissue — but the project was not done yet. The Dimepiece Edition brings the Intrepid's sizing down to a range that is suitable for both men and women, democratizing the model without losing much of the tool watch focus. The bezel has also been simplified from a slide rule to a 60-minute "count-up" scale. The 9 o'clock activation pusher is executed in a purple tone matching the dial 12 o'clock hour marker and center seconds hand.

The Timex Intrepid x Dimepiece Edition is priced at $239 and is available at Timex.com, Dimepiece.co, Todd Snyder, and END.

What We Think

Timex deserves more attention. There are few brands, if any, better at producing accessibly priced, interesting watches across a broad spectrum of styles, use cases, and levels of fun (my term, not theirs). The entire Intrepid project of 2025 should remind the watch world that a Timex is a great watch and that the brand has been at this for decades. Reviving and tweaking a niche, nostalgia-filled offering from the 1990s is hot — dare I say on trend — and the Dimepiece Edition seems to nail the details.

Wallner and Bedwell were smart to see the opportunity here. It's rare to find a genuinely interesting, lower-priced watch from the past with a great story behind it. The Intrepid hits the right notes by, first and foremost, being a great product — the JFK Jr. photo and history tug at the heartstrings, but that can't be the entire reason a reissue is a success. John John looking cool in the '90s might bring me in, but the case shape, cream dial, and INDIGLO functionality sell me.

The previous faithful reissue sold out quickly, but if there was one critique to be found within the @dimepiece.co Instagram comments, it was the case size. Wallner saw this coming, of course, and had already started on the Dimepiece Edition to give her new and growing corner of the watch world exactly what they wanted. This feels like the "cooler" sibling — still an Intrepid through and through, yet tweaked by that friend who annoyingly seems to always have impeccable taste.
