What We Know
It's July 15, which means it's time for Doxa to release another watch to honor the birthday of the late, legendary American novelist and explorer Clive Cussler. Cussler made a Doxa one of the leading "characters" of his novels on the wrist of the fictional explorer Dirk Pitt. Over the last few years, these limited-edition releases have taken the form of watches with a treatment that gives them a very worn look. This time around, not only does the watch look brand new, but the specs have also been updated.
The "SUB 750T Clive Cussler" special edition is a slightly slimmed-down version of the SUB 750T, now featuring a reduced 11.95mm thickness on the 45mm by 47mm case. That makes the new SUB 750T thinner than the SUB 300 (13.4mm) and SUB 300T (14mm) with 750m of water resistance and only 2.5mm in added width. It's also 2 mm thinner than the first SUB 750T launched
20 years ago. In addition to the new profile, the watch features the Cussler's National Underwater and Marine Agency logo at 7:30 on the dial, plus a date disc where 7, 15, and 31 are all in red (for Cussler's birthdate of July 15, 1931). The caseback features an engraved compass rose.
The watch houses a Sellita SW300 movement running at 4Hz with 56 hours of power reserve. The watch is delivered in this very literary-themed box shown below. Oh, it's worth noting for the Matthew McConaughey fans, today is the 20th anniversary of the film Sahara, based on Cussler's book. If that (and the specs of the watch in general) gets you excited to own a Doxa, you can pick up one of the 94 limited edition pieces on Doxa's site for $2,990.
What We Think
I am a firm believer in the idea that a Doxa is best when it's in its "professional" form (with an orange dial). A Sub 300 with the Aqualung logo at 7:30 is basically my perfect idea of a Doxa. The idea of taking Cussler's NUMA logo and placing it on the dial is a nice and similar homage. The more exciting thing is the updated sizing, but I'd have to see that in person to check out how it feels in the metal. Looking at the photos, the watch seems well-balanced, and for a bigger guy like me, the 45mm case (with the turtle "skirt" flange) should be plenty comfortable.
