Designer Stefan Sagmeister didn't become one of the leading voices in his field by pulling punches. He's outspoken, but always with a sense of thoughtfulness and respect that lends his opinions the gravity they need. If you listened to his full episode of HODINKEE Radio back in December, you'll know exactly what we're talking about.
After we recorded that conversation, Sagmeister played a little game, and that's what we have for you today. We presented him with five of the most iconic watches of all time – the Omega Speedmaster, the Patek Philippe Calatrava, the Rolex Submariner, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, and the Cartier Tank – and asked him to critique them from a designer's perspective.
And, boy, the takes are hot.
He loves some, hates some, and thinks some tell him everything he needs to know about somebody in a single glance (and not always good things).
Give the video above a watch and then let us know in the comments below what you think. Is the Speedy overrated? Is the Royal Oak misunderstood? You tell us.
