For all the talk escapements and their components tend to receive, there's very little thought about mainsprings, an essential component whose unfurling is as needed in portable timekeepers as any other part. Back in early 2020, our own Jack Forster confessed that despite his many years of interest in watches, he'd given very little thought to these coils.

Well, you can probably imagine what he did about that. Jack dove deep – like really deep – into the history of the unheralded mainspring in a way that only he can. On this Sunday afternoon, pour a cup of coffee, sit back, and learn the answers to all the questions about the mainspring that you didn't know to ask.
