When it comes to pre-GPS sailing in open water, you need an accurate watch to aid in making navigations and when using a sextant to stay on course. In this awesome story from Jason Heaton, we learn of Sir Francis Chichester's daring project to sail the "Clipper Route" alone. He was 66 at the time and the route, which was the fastest route around the world before the opening of the Panama Canal, encircles the globe and crosses great stretches of open water in several oceans.

It was a long and difficult journey but Chichester reported that his Rolex was reliable, accurate, and entirely up for the job. Among the seemingly endless stories of Rolex watches ticking along somewhere on the edge of civilization, Chichester's run on the Clipper Route really highlights the pure function of an analog device within an analog pursuit.
